IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  CN local halts short of N. Shawano St./Bus. 45 at what remains of the former GB&W yard at New London, WI on 21 Feb. '18. They have completed a runaround and will re-couple to their train in order to start working their way back to Appleton. The pulpwood cars on the team track in the background are owned by Marion Plywood Corp. (est. 1894). When loaded cars arrive the logs are trans-loaded to trucks for the 24-mile trip to Marion, WI. Marion had rail service, courtesy of C&NW, from 1879 to 1982. The reporting mark is based on Great Lakes Veneer, Inc., a subsidiary of Marion Plywood Corp. and co-located at its Marion, WI facility.

Description:  CN local momentarily fouls S. Whitman Ave. as it services Quality Carriers, just out-of-frame to the right, at the northwest corner of the wye at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 3 Mar. '18. An old caboose is partially visible background left. It is painted as RI 17177. Some references claim it was not their caboose, but MILW. The Foremost facility is partially visible background right. They have a spur, but it has not been used for quite a while.

Description:  A CN local approaches S. Railroad St. as it heads northeast through the former C&NW yard at Kimberly, WI on 31 Mar. '18. It’s depressing to see this small yard so empty. Just a couple of years ago, dozens of cars would have been seen here, waiting to be spotted for area customers. At left is a reminder of one of the previous owners of the line.

It was separated from Appleton Papers in ‘00 and became Appleton Coated, LLC. Some of the rails were pulled up from this small yard in '13. All that remains is a runaround to access a pair of spurs for this side of the mill (out-of-frame to left) and a spur for the warehouse at right (that spur does not appear to be used much, if at all, currently).

There are flashing blue lights on both sides of the driveway and a sign that says "Train in the area when flashing proceed with caution". The RR crew turns on the lights when they arrive. It looks like there used to be a RR crossing gates at both blue lights.

IC 9565 and IC 3138
Title:  IC 9565 and IC 3138
Description:  A CN local approaches Hwy. M as it heads northwest with 44 cars via former SOO rails at Medina Station, Town of Dale, Outagamie Co., WI on 6 Nov. '18. Train was headed for Waupaca and had two locomotives, IC 9565 and IC 3138. The WC built a depot here (on the opposite side of Hwy. M) somewhere between 1871, when the line was laid, and 1889, when I found it depicted on a map in Plat Book of Outagamie County…, 1889. The site was labeled as Medina Station on maps until at least 1915.

Title:  IC 9565 and IC 3138
Description:  A CN local crosses S. Mason St. while headed northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 9 Nov. '18. Train has just set out a string of cars at the yard at Appleton Junction and is now bound for Little Chute and Kaukauna. I haven't learned why one side of the bridge is lower than the other, but I recently discovered why one side is wider than the other. An old photograph reveals that the right (northbound) lane of S. Mason St. once accommodated a streetcar track and a lane for motor vehicle traffic simultaneously.

IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  An interesting, and unusual, CN local (returning from Waupaca) slows to halt short of N. Lake St. while headed southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 16 Nov. '18. I have a strong interest in railroad operations, but I am, admittedly, not well-versed in the specifics of their methods. This is one of those incidents which I find interesting, but it leaves me scratching my head. A crewmember, holding a fusee, is preparing to dismount to flag the crossing, even though the signals, bell, and gates were functioning.

IC 3138 and EJE 703
Title:  IC 3138 and EJE 703
Description:  A CN local momentarily fouls W. 2nd St. while setting out cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 29 Nov. '18. After finishing up here, the local will continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. A few blocks away, another local waits to enter the yard after working Kimberly and Combined Locks. Silly me, I thought that current law prohibits any of us from attempting to “drive any vehicle through, around, or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing while such gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.” Evidently, this truck driver feels that the law does not apply to him. The near side gate is just out-of-frame to the right; you need to zoom in to see the far side gate partially visible between the locomotive and the truck.

Hwy. 41, partially visible to the right, was not visible from here until a substantial growth of trees and brush between the two rails lines was removed in the summer or fall of 2018. IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  A CN local pauses under the Main St. overpass on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. Train was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. I'm not positive, but I believe the Holiday station stood right about here before the overpass was built.

IC 3138 and GTW 6226
Title:  IC 3138 and GTW 6226
Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The local, preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna, is approaching the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. In the background, GTW 6226 prepares to transition from the east leg of the wye to the north leg of the wye. The white building partially visible between the locomotives is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) stood to the left, at what is now Arrowhead Park, until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. Opened in Jan. '98, it stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill dominated the skyline in the background for 135 years, the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The corporate headquarters of Plexus, 1 Plexus Way, (out of frame to left), and an Ascension clinic (formerly Affinity clinic) at 101 Main St. occupy most of the site of the old paper mill. Neenah's newest, modern eyesore, the Gateway office building (also obviously used by Plexus), looms in the background. After razing some more cool, old buildings, construction commenced on 4 May '16 and was completed about a year later. There is no room for historic buildings and classic architecture in Future Neenah.

IC 3138
Title:  IC 3138
Description:  A CN local traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Jun. '19. The local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. Beyond the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye.
