Caught him |
Description: |
By the time I waited for the UP train to reach the Illinois River bridge, got turned around and rolling, the grain train was well on his way. I was able to catch the head end again just south of Baron. Normally I do a tele shot here, but I didnt beat him by enough to get it. |

Waiting on the grain |
Description: |
When I got to Stilwell, this northbound H train was waiting in the siding. For the second day in a row, I caught one of the AC44CW's in Belle paint, three of them in two days. They must be catching up at the paint shop. Also in consist is an ex ATSF SD 75M, now a lease unit. I had to do a few things in town, so I shot him here, got the grain train at the station, then went to take care of my chores. Id pick up the chase shortly, though. |

Description: |
Normally, I prefer the shot on the other side of this bridge-the one with the Elk River going under it. In the months with shorter days, the sun doesnt come over to that side til almost sunset. My choice was do the scenic shot, but with the train in shadow, or do the sun side, but not so scenic. Bagging it altogether was also an option. I picked the sun side, and it turned out OK. The bridge piers draw the viewers attention to the train, making a nice photo. |

The train, not the cow. My daughter was in from Tampa for Thanksgiving, returning this Monday morning. We passed through Gentry on the way to the airport, seeing the back of this empty oil train as we turned onto Ark 12 to go to XNA. I figured, this guy will be gone when we get back after dropping her off. To my surprise, the train was still there, waiting at the Ark 59B crossing, in the company of one of the local residents. There would be more action unfolding shortly. |

Description: |
When we got back to Gentry, we figured this train was waiting on a meet, which appeared to be imminent when we heard a horn off to the north. Not quite. This pair of units came down and coupled to the head end. I wasnt there to see what had gone on before we got there, but if I had to guess, they had a problem with the lead unit, and took the DPU and moved it to the head end. The plan was to chase this guy north, but KCS had other plans. Things don't often work out as you thought. |

The sand train rolls through the home signals at South Gentry as the empty oil train starts to pull away, finally on the move after at least a 2 1/2 hour wait. Sometimes the chase comes to you |
Description: |
We were down in Westville, just out for a ride in the nice weather-low 60s and sun-when we crossed the tracks to see this empty oil train coming north. Unfortunately, I was crossing from west to east, and had to wait for the train to pass before I could go after it. Thus, this is the first shot, taken near the intersection of US 59 and Chewie Rd, crossing an old stone culvert. This is the DPU-actually, the leading power on the way south-trailing 105 cars. |

Taking the siding |
Description: |
The empty oil train takes the siding to pass a southbound AEPX train that is holding the main. Not sure why they do this. It has to be more efficient for the first train to take the siding, rather than the second train, which is moving, to roll through the siding at restricted speed. Theres probably a rule for that, and I am aware of the priority of trains by timetable, but even then, northbound trains have right over southbounds. |

Another meet |
Description: |
After shooting the train at Watts, we got the shot of the coal train leaving town, then ran up to Siloam to hopefully catch the head end, which we had missed so far in the chase. He was rolling under US 412 when we passed Mt Olive St, so I made a quick turn on Washington, hoping to beat him to the Jefferson St crossing. He was taking the siding for yet another meet, so easy picking. After all that, a single unit leads. Hell sit here for 20 minutes or so. |

Pan shot |
Description: |
I was coming back from dropping off some baked goods to one of my wifes friends, rolling back streets through Siloam. When I approaghed the Kenwood St crossing, the gates started to come down. I grabbed my camera, but wasnt fast enough to catch the train there, but was quite surprised at the leader: the spexial painted SD 70ACe in support of our armed forces. I did a quick turn, racing(as best one can on US 412) through town, and south to Watts. I caught up to the head end near MP 237, and grabbed this pan shot out the window. Good looking unit!! |

Swinging through |
Description: |
I got ahead enough to set up ^t the S curve near Chewie Rd, shooting across US 59. At that moment, I was really glad ODOT had cleared out the trees when they widened the road. |
