East Altoona. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in East Altoona, Pennsylvania. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1138, an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during January of 1916 and retired in February of 1960 after 44 years of faithful service. Its main driving rods have been removed, so it's been prepared for movement to the Recycling Center. Prominent in the background is the 17th Street Bridge; beyond it (at the far left) is the East Altoona Roundhouse. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded. |

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4644, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during October of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in January of 1943, and retired in February of 1960 after 37 years of faithful service. East Altoona. Here is an image of a photo by Mike Zollitsch that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in June of 1964. At the right is the Pennsylvania Railroad's East Altoona Roundhouse. This structure was completed in 1903 and was billed as "The World's Largest Roundhouse." To the left of it are the former Westbound Locomotive Ready Tracks, now inhabited by numerous deadlined diesels. In the distance is the East Altoona Coaling Tipple.
