Late 270 |
Description: |
Train 270 was usually a morning/mid day arrival in the Binghamton area, but sometimes it would not show til the afternoon, such as todays train. It is approaching the NY 17C underpass with a mix of power that includes a pair of six motor Alcos, not commonly seen on the Tier. Todays train is a combination of 270 and 558, with 15 stack platforms, 4 COFC and 69 freight. |

Easy pickings |
Description: |
The railroad is next to NY 17C for a good part of the trip between Endicott and Waverly, making for great access, and one of the reasons this line is so easy to chase. Heres 557 rolling west, seen from the shoulder of the road. It has just passed the signal pair at MP 242-you can see 242-2 over the first container, and 242-1 to the left of the second red box. These were a pair of semaphores up til February of that year. |

One place I didnt shoot a lot of trains, partly because it was hard to beat a train to it after getting the shot at Chemung, and partly because the view was in shadow much of the day, was here at Wellsburg. I like to put railroad lineside items in my photos; mileposts are always a good prop. MP 216 is on the Tier where in Johnson City, down off a back street. On the fast track |
Description: |
The Southern Tier Line west of Hornell was double track to CP River, roughly where the old NT tower was on EL, where the River Line to Olean split from the Buffalo Sub. Under Conrail, it had a dual personality. Track 1 was fairly well maintained, and good for track speed of 40 MPH. Track 2, on the other hand, was not. It had about 10 miles of 25 MPH running, the rest 10 MPH. It was jokingly referred to as the "D&H Main," since dispatchers faced with a choice of running a D&H train on track 1, or a Conrail train, would send the D&H train down track 2, making for a long trip to Hornell. Train 270 had good luck this day, and got the fast track. Seen here passing the semaphore pole-about 7 cars from the head end, on the left-at Hunt with 11 intermodal and 36 freight. |

The signal at MP 247 was fairly easy to get to-there was a maintenance road access right off NY 17C, all you had to know was where to turn, and have a long lens ready. It was one of a half dozen Erie semaphores still standing at that time. They would last into the 21st century. Here we see a 557 rolling west behind a typical mix of a GP9u and SD40. |

Red engines in the blue hour |
Description: |
That last few minutes of the day where dusk is settling in is often referred to as the "blue hour." I caught 557 behind a pair of SDs just at that moment, passing a collapsing barn just east of Waverly. You can feel the cold getting into your bones. |

MP 250 |
Description: |
CP trai 391 rolls past Erie milepost 250 as it approaches Waverly. There must have been a slow order, as this is only 2 1/2 miles west of the semaphore shot at Barton. Id catch him again twice before Waverly, and again at Chemung. |

Hard to get |
Description: |
There was a semaphore on track 2, 245-2, that you had to cross a field to reach. As a result, I did not shoot it much. Heres a from the road look as 391 passes, the board seen between the two diesels. |

391 and another semaphore |
Description: |
There were a lot of Erie semaphores still in service at the time. This is the third one I shot this train with that day. The pipe hanging down from the signal was for the hot box detector indicator light, now removed since new radio alarm detectors had been installed a couple years before. |
