According to the October 1971 issue of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER), this car is one of 49 cars in to 2100-2149 number series, 50' 5" inside length (54' 11" outside), 9' 2" inside width (10' 8" extreme width), 10' 6" inside height (15' 1" extreme height), 9' wide, 9'10" high door, 4860 cubic foot capacity. There are two notes about the cars in this number series: Note K states, "Cars in these series have specially equipped interiors and are not suitable for general service." Note NN indicates that this car (among others listed), "is equipped with fork lift truck pallets, platforms or skids which will be considered part of the car." It appears to have acquired a replacement door during a shopping. |

According to the October 1971 edition of the Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER) the Milwaukee Road had several groups of RBL's, this one falls into the series 2815-2944, 121 cars, 50'1" inside length9'10" inside height, either a 9'3" or 8'2" inside width (it wasn't clear why there's a variable width, but there were several notes), was equipped with movable bulkheads, rub rails or retractable side fillers, 10'6" wide by 9'4" high door, 4291 cubic foot, 138,000 pound capacity. It is stencilled: NEW 3-64 and WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO BRC ARGO ILL. |

MILW X5001 at Bensenville, Illinois on February 9, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Here's what I have so far. The X5001 was a former Milwaukee Road drovers car and was one of a group of 15 original cars. These steel cupola cabooses were built by the Milwaukee in 1929 and were their first steel cabooses. The X5001 was originally built as the MILW 01612 but later became an instruction car, then a superintendent's office and was renumbered MILW X5001 somewhere along the way. When the SOO Line assumed control of the Milwaukee Road in 1986 the car retained the X5001 number, and was painted in SOO's candy apple red. This may be one of the only cars in the group to ride on express reefer style trucks. This caboose is now part of the collection at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. Another source suggests this may have been a dynomometer car. It does have a wire run to the second journal from the far end. Although the rest of the journal box covers are missing, they are no longer necessary as it is equipped with roller bearings. For the record, it appears that MILW X5000 was a dynamometer car and the X5002 was an instruction car. This photo was used in a soft-cover book entitled Caboose Country put out by the NMRA in 1995, by the staff at Kalmbach Memorial Library, and here is their caption: The Chicago Milwaukee Saint Paul & Pacific (Milwaukee Road) riveted-steel caboose seen here in 1986 started life as a drover caboose in the late 1920's. Drovers functioned as both cabooses and as a rolling home for cowhands accompanying their 'doggies' to market. This one originally had six pull-down bunks. Later a kitchenette and swiveling parlor car chairs were added, transforming it into a 'business car'. The box near the cupola houses a water tank for the kitchen. This caboose boasts air conditioning as well as underdeck lights to view the track. |

Milwaukee Road Instruction Car X5002 in the coach yard at Grand and California Avenues in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. As best I can figure out, this car was built around 1952 as a 14 ection sleeper named Cannon Falls and numbered 5772. Around 1956 it was converted to a 52 seat coach and renumbered 552. Around 1971 it was converted to a 40 seat coach and renumbered 651. I don't have a date for conversion to Instruction car. If anyone knows more, please leave a comment. Milwaukee Road 4-6-2 6335, date, location, and photographer unknown, print from Heier Industrial Photo, Chuck Zeiler collection. I guessed at the location based on the Schlitz signage. I purchased this print on one of the CB&Q steam fan trips from Greg Heier. If anyone has any further information, please leave a comment. Number 6335 was built by Alco-Brooks in June 1912 as CM&StP 1557 (c/n 51333), renumbered in September 1912 to 6335 class F-5, became CMStP&P 6335 in 1927, renumbered to CMStPP&P 818 in September 1938, retired in April 1952. |
