Album Info:Conrail Shared Assets Operations North Jersey District Oak Island Receiving Yard Newark, New Jersey, USA 19 March 2016 - 17:00 ESDT NS #1700 "Erie Lackawanna" Heritage Unit [EMD SD45-2] NS #1704 [EMD SD45-2] I had planned to make a trip to the CSAO Chemical Coast... oops sorry; GARDEN STATE SECONDARY, to catch one of the newest Heritage Locomotives painted up by Norfolk Southern. I'm partial to conventional cabs, so the series of "heritage units" previously done (SD70ACe's and GE ES44AC's - both models wide cab), while appealing; I never went out of my way to chase them. NS did an SD45-2, (a conventional cab model) in Erie Lackawanna. As luck would have it, I was staying overnight in Newark to bring my hunny Deborah to Newark Airport for a flight to Texas VERY early the next morning. Well, come the dawn of March 19th, and EL #1700 was parked pretty much outside my hotel room window! We were staying on the 7th floor, but I went up to an alcove on the 12th floor for a better angle and untinted windows (The room windows are darkly bronze tinted). I actually had to change the color temperature in custom white balance to compensate (you can see the difference in the first couple of images). I freely admit, I chose this hotel and even specified the wing just so I could photograph the Oak Island Engine Facility. But did not expect to see this loco. This locomotive was built for the Erie Lackawanna originally, so it is (with minor but current mechanical modifications) a "true" heritage unit. © 2016 - Philip M. Goldstein
