Album Info:Here is a two-page article entitled "Makeover" that was published originally in the May/June 1990 issue of "Conrail Inside Track" magazine, pages 10-11. No author is specified. This article describes the evolution of railroad cars that were built and rebuilt in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, from 1964 through 1990. The original product was the Pennsylvania Railroad's H-43 hopper car, a three-bay unit capable of transporting 100 tons of coal or other cargo. These were produced in large numbers from 1964 through 1968. During the Penn Central Railroad era, the existing fleet was simply renumbered. Some 25 years later, Conrail decided to transform 300 of these H-43 hopper cars into G52L gondolas. "At a rate of five cars per day ~ 25 cars per week ~ the employees at the Hollidaysburg Car Shop at Hollidaysburg have transformed aging, out-of-service, 100-ton coal hopper cars into sleek, economical, gondolas ready to transport coal." "The hopper cars are stripped of their old bodies so that only the trucks and [center sills] remain, and then rebuilt. The finished cars sport flat-bottomed tubs to hold the coal instead of the traditional V-bottomed hoppers with doors underneath, and are used for rotary dump coal service instead of bottom dump service."
