Album Info:Here are the front cover and an 11-page cover article by Mr. Bert Pennypacker entitled "Atterbury's Engines: Part 1 ~ Great Increases In Horsepower And Speed." They were published originally in the October 1979 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 22-32. "So in 1923 Gen. William Wallace Atterbury, [PRR's] Vice President Operations, decided the time had come to acquire a special mountain-going passenger hauler that could, once and for all, reduce helper requirements, for he had lived through the years with triple-headed power ~ first with E-2 Atlantics, later with K-2sa light Pacifics, then with K-4s's." Juniata-built sister 5698 (right and below) was equipped with orthodox Walschaerts valve motion. The two giants borrowed M-1 components and forecast the M-1a. Depression and electrification killed reorders of K-5's."
