Viewing Album: Railfanning the Southern Transcon: Barstow-Needles
By:
Lucas Connor
Dates:
12/19/2021 - 12/27/2022
Album Info:
The BNSF Southern Transcon is the primary Los Angeles-Chicago rail corridor for freight. Trains leaving Los Angeles traverse Cajon Pass to Barstow, where the line turns east. Trains from Oakland, Stockton, Sacramento, and Bakersfield, climb Tehachapi Pass to Mojave, where BNSF's Mojave Sub runs east to Barstow, connecting with the Cajon Sub from Victorville. From Barstow, the tracks wind east, passing through Dagget, before reaching Needles. Union Pacific's Cima Sub leaves the Transcon at Dagget, and runs north to Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Ogden. Pictures in this album include BNSF trains from Victorville to Needles via Barstow and UP trains from Barstow to Daggett, and along the Cima Sub to the Nevada border south of Las Vegas.

Fakebonnet and Swoosh
Description:
BNSF 751 and 6189 are the trailing units on a westbound stack train as it passes the tail end of an ethanol train eastbound. 751 wears the famed Warbonnet scheme of BNSFs predecessor Santa Fe. This unit never operated under Santa Fe, however, having been built in 1997, two years after the Santa Fe-Burlington Northern merger. Units such as this Dash-9 are known by railfans as "Fakebonnets" for this reason.

BNSF & NS Westbound
Description:
BNSF 5788 leads NS 7615 on a westbound stack train east of Dagget. 5788 is an ES44AC, built by GE in 2005. 7615 is one of 220 ES44DCs owned by Norfolk Southern. These units were originally constructed as ES40DCs, the successor to the C40-9. These units were built exclusively for NS. In the mid 2010s, these units were upgraded to 4400 horsepower, essentially making them ES44DCs.

BNSF 6834
Description:
BNSF 6834 and 7222, on the point of a westbound stack train, race another west to Barstow. 6834 was built by GE as an ES44C4, similar in almost every way to an ES44AC, but with A1A trucks instead of the standard 6-axle trucks. 7222 was built in 2009 as a stock ES44DC. The third unit, 8000, is another ES44C4.

ATSF 1460
Description:
Santa Fe 1460 rests at the Barstow Amtrak Station. The old engine is part of the collection of the Western America Railroad Museum, located in Barstow. 1460 was built in 1943 by Baldwin as a VO-1000, one of 59 the railroad would own, and was numbered 2200. After the successful converion of Santa Fe F-units to hood-unit roadswitchers, a similar approach was undertaken with 2200. The engine was gutted of internal components, and a GP7-style long hood was constructed to house the 567 prime mover. The unit was completed in late 1970, and was renumbered 2450. 38 years and a merger later, BNSF 1460 was retired, and was stored in Topeka, Kansas, before coming to Barstow.

UP 9950
Description:
Union Pacific 9950 is an SD40-2 currently on display at the Western America Railroad Museum at the Barstow Harvey House Depot. 9950 was built by EMD in 1980 for Missouri Pacific as their 3320. When UP bought the MP in 1982 and fully merged in early 1997, the unit was repainted into UP colors and was renumbered to 4320. The unit served with UP for another 7 years, before being donated to the museum on March 6, 2004. Behind the locomotive on the right is Santa Fe FP45 95, in Warbonnet colors, and on the left is former Santa Fe SD40 5007 (lettered as GN 6307).

BNSF 6307
Description:
SD40 6307 rests in the parking lot at the Western America Railroad Museum in Barstow. 6307 was originally Santa Fe 1707, built by EMD in 1966. The unit was renumbered not long after to ATSF 5007. In the early 1980s, Santa Fe rebuilt and repainted the locomotive, giving it the designation SD40u. The unit would keep its number, however, until the BNSF merger, whne it would be renumbered 6307. The unit oerated with BNSF for over 10 years, finally being sidelined in 2009. In order to clear room in the roster for new ES44ACs from GE, BNSF 6307 officially became GN 6307, and was stripped of Santa Fe markings. The unit was stored at Barstow with an uncertain future for 10 years, before finally being donated to the museum in 2019, where it now resides with fellow SD40 Unioon Pacific 9950.
