Album Info:Today was the first revenue run(s) (after restoration) of N&W Business Car No. 300 (Ocean) since it was preserved by the N&W 300 Business Car Preservation Society a couple years ago. The cars current home is the Little River Railroad in south central Michigan, which operates over the INER Coldwater Branch, so I decided to take the afternoon to watch some history on the INER and catch some other trains along the way. Enjoy!

BNSF 7000
Title:  BNSF 7000
Description:  Today, N&W Business Car No. 300 was operating for the very first time since its restoration over the INER in Michigan. The car has not ran occupied in over 30 years, so I decided I wanted to go see some history take place this afternoon. The car was operating between Coldwater and Hillsdale under Little River Railroad Crews (the cars home for now) between Coldwater and Hillsdale, MI. I ended up getting up too late to go catch the first run, but I was plenty awake to get to the second run in time. In fact, I was a bit too early so I had a little time to kill. On my way up I followed the Wabash Main toward Butler, and I ended up stopping around Spencerville to grab NS 181 coming west with a BNSF H3 GEVO leading an H1 Dash 9 in a freak lake effect snow shower. A pretty good way to start the day!

Title:  BNSF 978
Description:  Definitely would have preferred to see this lead, but I will certainly take what I can get. I believe this is the first H1 unit I have caught on camera this year. I document so many trains I usually forget what I have and havent seen!

CP 7047
Title:  CP 7047
Description:  A rebuild CP SD70ACe brings up the rear of CP 528. One of my all time personal favorite engines to see the golden beaver scheme on. I havent seen a bunch of these red SD70ACus. Long hood forward bothers a lot of fans out there but it never has me very much, especially on these SD70ACus. I find it quite nice, however, that GP at least adds the logo to the rear!

IN 1601
Title:  IN 1601
Description:  Unfortunately I did end up spending just a little too much time on the Waterlevel Route, as the second run of the business car had already left Hillsdale before I could get up there. I did, however, make it to the curve at Thompsan Road north of Allen, MI well before the train got there. I met fellow railfans Ethan Hopper and Noah Smith trackside there and we followed the train back to Coldwater from there. Leading todays train was INER 1601, one of 3 high hood GP9s featured on the INER roster, facing nose out nonetheless! A fantastic combination!

N&W 300
Title:  N&W 300
Description:  Looks fantastic and plenty of ridership today by the looks of it! (Per Railfan and Railroad)Built by Pullman in 1917 for the United States Railroad Administration, it was sold to the N&W in 1920, modernized in 1955 and deemed surplus and sold in 1977. Privately owned and renamed “Ocean,” it went into storage in 1991 and was donated to the society in 2020. The car was repainted in its original N&W Ocean Blue Paint scheme and named "Roanoke", where the car was built.

Description:  I made a wrong tunr and ended up having to settle grabbing the train by a new set of ties that are slated to go in someime over the summer. The railroad received a hefty COVID relief fund from the USDOT and the entire stretch of track from Coldwater to just east of Quincy is slated to undergo a major rehabilitation project; new ties and new rail! Goodbye 10 MPH runs!

N&W 300
Title:  N&W 300
Description:  We move to the other end to grab some shots of the passenger car. Brakeman Kyle Steinke was generous enough to give Noah, Ethan, and I a grand tour of the inside of the car. I am floored at how well it has come along. It is immaculate from top to bottom on both the inside and out. The car will remain on the Little River Railroad for the near future and will be rented out to private VIPs when the Little River Railroad runs or INER runs their own business excursions. The next project for the car is to be installed with a fully operational kitchen. After our tour I Noah and I said our goodbyes to Ethan as he took off back north to college in Kzoo while Noah and I booked south to catch CP 234 on the Chicago Line, which had both CP 8781, the Hapag-Lloyd Specialty Unit, and CP 7015, one of 5 block lettered heritage units, on the front.

CP 8781 (Hapag-Lloyd Specialty Unit!)
Title:  CP 8781 (Hapag-Lloyd Specialty Unit!)
Description:  Thankfully for us, Waterloo is a straight shot down from Coldwater on I69, so we were able to book it south. Noah was a bit too far behind me though, and we wasnt able to squeeze the tiny gap of time between arriving in Waterloo and when the train passed. I, however, did, and waited less than 2 minutes before the train roared east by the depot doing an easy 60 MPH!

Description:  By the time I made it to Sdi NS L96 was already leaving, but thankfully the traffic ahead of me was pretty sparse so I was able to get down to the giant pond just north of Saint Joe and shoot it there. BNSF 7517
Title:  BNSF 7517
Description:  It took a bit of waiting, but finally I got my first moving train in CSX I172 with a trio of BNSF leaders. CSX is also undergoing a symbol change. Intermodals will now be under the letter "I" instead of "Q", Manifests under "M" instead of "Q", locals under "L" instead of "J, H, M, etc..." and so forth. Not sure what this is all about, but its the railroad. They like to do confusing things! The intermodal and local symbols have already changed, whereas the manifest and bulk train symbols are supposed to go under their changes by the end of the month.
