Title:  Rio Grande overpass
Description:  The Rio Grande has been gone 35 years at this point, having taken over the SP, and yielded its name to the larger operation, itself later absorbed into UP. But the herald lives on, still in good paint on this Colorado overpass.

Union Station
Title:  Union Station
Description:  This is the concourse of Union Station, seen from the balcony. Its the only one of the five Chicago stations then in use to retain its original character. La Salle(Rock Island), Northwestern and Randolph St(ICG and South Shore) all have been replaced by office towers. Dearborn was closed once its only remaining train, the "Orland Park Cannonball" on a remnant of the Wabash, was moved to Union Station by Metra.

Starrucca House
Title:  Starrucca House
Description:  The Erie Railroad built huge stations at its division points, and Susquehanna was no exception, as it was the division point between the Delaware and Susquehanna Divisions, as well as home to its system passenger car shops. By the 1980s, it was a shadow of its former self, thtough it would return to some small measure of glory as a restaurant in the years to come. Here is is in August of 1985, having ahd some work done, and looking better than it had in recent years.

Union station
Title:  Union station
Description:  This station at Palmer Mass was a union station, serving both the Boston & Albany, and Central Vermont. Were looking across Conrails ex B&A Boston Line. In 1986, passenger trains no longer stopped here, though the Boston section of the Lake Shore passed by. A few years hence, the Montrealer would pass on the CV after it was rerouted off the B&M Conn River line due to Guilfords inability to maintain the track to adequate standards for Amtrak. At the time of this photo, there was a restaurant/bar in the building.

Carnival ride from hell
Title:  Carnival ride from hell
Description:  Before self unloading ore boats became common, minerals were unloaded at lake ports with these Hulett unloaders, seen from the passing Lake Shore Limited. They look like something out of a Star Wars movie, and operating one was described as being on a "carnival ride from hell" due to the operator riding in a bucket mounted cab. Several of these relics are still on the Cleveland waterfront in 1990, not long for the world. The ore jennies in the foreground, however, will stay at it a few more years.

NYC station
Title:  NYC station
Description:  Several friends and I rode the Lake Shore to Toledo, changed there to the Lake Cities, a Toledo-Detroit-Chicago connection, to get the mileage through Michigan. The train ran push-pull to eliminate the need to run around at Detroit. The cab car trailed on the Detroit-Chicago segment, allowing us to look out the rear. This is the old NYC station at Dexter Mich, seen from the cab car.

The station looks good, having not seen a scheduled passenger train since the Lake Cities last ran on Jan 6 1970.Were 61 miles west of Salamanca here. Bridge to the sky
Title:  Bridge to the sky
Description:  Among the other places we visited that weekend was Kinzua Bridge, which had been demolished by a tornado earlier in the year. There had been a rehab project going on at the time, but it had completed only a portion of the piers, which had serious corrosion from over 100 years in the harsh climate of western PA. That part of the bridge stayed up, which we see silhouetted against the cold November sky.
