South Western Electric Power COmpany (SWEPCO) GE 80 tonner #88 (actual number unknown, the 88 assigned by me for classification purposes) stackes capped, at Alliance, Nebraska on May 14, 1984, Kodachrome by Jim Altman, Chuck Zeiler collection. The slide is labeled: SWEPCO (Southwestern Electric Power Co.) GE 'Super 88', Alliance, NE, 051484, one of 8 made - see p.33 in X2200S #68. This was a mystery locomotive. I posted this photo some time ago on another web site and asked for information, and BandAfan responded as follows: From X2200S #68, this is a GE 'Super 88', one of 8 built, 4 went to Cuba. Called Super 88 because it supposedly had twice the power of a 44 tonner, but weighed 80-82 tons, nominally. Powered by Cummins VT12 prime movers. SWEPCO unit originally Winifrede RR #12 (7/57). Sold to Diamond Shamrock as #22, 1969, to SWEPCO in 1978. |
