CN local parallels Hwy. 41 and passes under Hwy. G as it services a couple of industries along the former C&NW main line at Snells, WI on 29 Aug. '15. Snells is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. A Post Office was established 4 May 1876, originally called Snell’s Station, sometimes referred to as Snell’s Crossing. This small, rural community once included a depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. Snells was located at Mile 183 on the SOO’s Trevor to Somerset line and Mile 173.1 on the C&NW’s Milwaukee to Marinette line. The former SOO main line is in the foreground. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. |

CN local slowly crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it prepares to service Expera Specialty Solutions mill at Kaukauna, WI on 30 Aug. '15. It's unusual to see this train with only one locomotive. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. A portion of the old Thilmany mill, saved from the wrecking ball and undergoing restoration, is visible behind the locomotive. The Kaukauna Veterans Memorial Bridge is partially visible behind the remnants of the mill. The current, newer, mill looms out of frame to the right. From its founding in 1883 until 26 Jun. '13, the Kaukauna paper mill was Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. (a.k.a. Thilmany, LLC or Thilmany Papers). |

CN local crosses the South Channel (Neenah Channel) of the Fox River while it services Neenah Paper via a remnant of the former C&NW mainline at Neenah, WI on 10 Apr. '16. The recently renamed ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah looms in the background. From its construction in 1909 until 23 Mar. '16, it was named Theda Clark Hospital, in honor of the daughter of a local paper baron (Medical Center eventually replaced Hospital in the name). After ThedaCare acquired most of the local hospitals, the geniuses in charge thought it was too confusing to keep their traditional names, like Theda Clark, Appleton Medical Center, Shawano Hospital/Medical Center, etc. So let’s rename them all ThedaCare Regional Medical Centers. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it? |

Description: |
CN local shoves a couple of boxcars across N. Lake St. as it services the Clearwater Paper Corp. mill via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 21 May '16. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29, known as the Lakeview Mill. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. The mill is a longtime rail customer, a map from 1955 shows 6 spurs to service this paper mill, now there are 2, but only this sees regular use. |

CN local shoves a couple of boxcars into the large Clearwater Paper Corp. mill via former SOO rails at Town of Menasha, WI on 21 May '16. Aug. ’96. CN local returns to the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 May '16. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, the corporate overlords didn’t want to spend any money to update the plant. It stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished. |

CN local, headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna, approaches the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 5 Jun. '16. They are passing some new apartments or condominiums erected last year at the former site of the historic Eagle Manufacturing Co. complex between E. Winnebago St., N. Union St., E. Commercial St., and behind a row of houses on N. Drew St. Eagle Manufacturing, makers of gasoline engines, tractors, and other farm implements, was incorporated in the Flats at Appleton, WI in Dec. 1888. When they outgrew that facility, they began construction of a new factory here in ’04. Over the years it grew until it occupied most of the block. Before its expansion it shared the block with the Ideal Lumber and Coal Co. to the east. Further east of that was C. D. Rowell & Son, Manufacturing, makers of car movers, fronting N. Union St. between E. Winnebago St. and E. Commercial St. All 3 facilities were served by C&NW. There was a diamond in the middle of the east end of E. Winnebago St., just west of N. Union St., near the small clump of trees on the right, for at least two spurs leading into that block. |

CN local crawls across the former C&NW bridge over the Fox River as it services the Expera Specialty Solutions (originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co.) paper mill at Kaukauna, WI on 28 Jan. '13. Locals need to pull onto the bridge in order to clear the turnout which permits them to shove cars into the mill's stub yard. The rails now end at the opposite bank of the Fox River, but they used to continue to a wye at the intersection of Island St. and Dodge St. The north leg of the wye led to C&NW's Kaukauna yard and shops and on to Appleton Junction. The east leg of the wye led to Manitowoc, WI. The train was too long to be shoved into the mill's stub yard all at once. This is the second half, the remainder of the train was spotted a few minutes earlier. Bridge was built by American Bridge Co. of New York in 1911. |
