Description:  ALRAY CA Sept 7 1983 -- This SD40T-2 and three other tunnel motors are hauling an autorack train. Visible above the rear of the lead unit are balloons and a man in shorts. While we were perched in the rocks he drove up in a van with awell-dressed woman. He set up an eifht-foot table and attached balloons to it. After about 30 minutes of wandering around looking at the setup with the woman posing (clothed) he packed up and left. Darned if I know what he was doing. Maybe he was hoping we would leave.

Painful reminders of a failed merger attempt between the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific of a decade earlier could still be found on the Southern Pacific System in 1993.

Description:  EB through Afton Canyon. SP 8694 was wrecked as the lead unit in a fatal head-on collision in Bertram, California on Nov 10 2007, less than a month after this photo was taken. The unit was officially numbered UP 2780 "on paper" at the time, but was still physically wearing her old number, SP 8694. Reports say the unit will likely be scrapped, but scrapping has not been confirmed as of June 2008.
