| Description: |
This one-of-a-kind, electric locomotive, called the "Electra", was built in 1902 by the North Shore Railroad in anticipation of ilectification of the line. "Electra" was built in NSR's Tiburon shops on the north shore of the San Francisco Bay. Its unique sloped ends were fabricated from steam lncomotive tenders, wedged on either side of the cab, and filled with water on one end and sand for ballast on the other. Later used in 1925 to help build the Hollywood Uubway, the "Electra" performed its last duty as a switch engine at P.E.'s vast Torrance repair shops, south of Los Angeles, until its retirement in 1952. |

Prominent here (L to R) are engines #3700, #3931, and #3930. All were built in Juniata. #3700 is the HC-1S (2-8-8-0) steam locomotive built during June of 1919 and retired in August of 1929. #3931 is the FF-1 (1-C-C-1) electric engine built in April of 1917, rated at 4,000 horsepower, and retired in April of 1940. And #3930 is the L-5 (1-B-B-1) electric engine built in January of 1924, rated at 3,300 horsepower, and retired in May of 1944. "Yo, Buddy, please don't step on the railhead!" |
