MON FM H-15-44 #46 - Monon RR |
Description: |
Seemingly opened up for all to see its workings is this Fairbanks Morse H-15-44 loco built in December of 1948 as MON #37 (serial #L1199). renumbered in February of 1949 and re-engineered by EMD in 1960. In May of 1970 before the merger into the L&N in 1972, this loco was sold to Industrial Maintenance Service and scrapped. No information accompanied the photo except a margin date stamd pf March, 1969, which seems appropriate as the loco looks like it was on a scrap line. |

MON BL2 #37 - Monon RR |
Description: |
Caught idle in a stored string of locos at an unidentified location, this EMD BL2 unit was built in May of 1949 for the Monon RR. This was definitely a transitional body style for EMD as they moved from the E & F car bodies to the multi-directional GP styling. According to the Monon Historical Society webpage, it was sold for scrap in 1969 to P-RSL. |

CRI&P H-15-44 401 |
Description: |
CRI&P H-15-44 401 at the Rocket House, around 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on October 31, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in December 1948 (c/n 15L13), and along with number 400, were the only two Fairbanks - Morse locomotives on Rock Island's roster. They were specially equipped for suburban service, having both a steam generator and provisions for head-end coach lighting power (note power cables dangling from a connection next to the headlight). In May 1958, both H-15-44's were re-engined with EMD 16-567C prime movers, creating 1500 horsepower units that were essentially GP7's in F-M carbodies. Although the 567C (used in the GP9, SD9, and F9 EMD models) was rated at 1750 hp, it was likely de-rated to accommodate the reuse of the original Westinghouse Model 370-F traction motors (I'm still researching the traction motors). The letter F painted on the frame indicates that this is the Front of the locomotive. One source states the two F-M's were traded to GE during September 1966. |

CNJ H15-44 1502 |
Description: |
Central Railroad Company of New Jersey H15-44 1502 at Jersey City, New Jersey on an unknown day in July 1964, Anscochrome by unknown photographer, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 1502 was built in January 1949 (c/n 15L16) and equipped with a steam generator in the short hood. The following is from the book, Fairbanks-Morse Locomotives In Color, by Jim Boyd: The railroad that pioneered dieselization in the United States when it purchased a GE/Ingersol-Rand 1000 h.p. boxcab switcher in 1929 had a long and productive relationship with Fairbanks-Morse following the August 1947 convention of the Association of American Railroads in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Among the units displayed there by FM was H15-44 demonstrator 1500, which caught the attention of the Jersey Central, which well into dieselization with switchers as well as EMD and Baldwin cab units. Seeking a road switcher that could handle a variety of tasks, the CNJ found the H15-44 to be just what it was looking for and bought that demonstrator while placing an order for 13 similar units. When it arrived in September 1948, after overhaul at Beloit, the 1500 was CNJ's first road switcher, with Baldwins, Alcos, and EMDs to follow. The CNJ went on to purchase three H16-44's and a 13-unit fleet of Train Masters. |

FMIX H15-44 #1503 Demonstrator |
Description: |
Built by Fairbanks-Morse in February of 1949, this unit served as their demonstrator until being sold to LIRR as their #1503. It was unique as it was a 1500 hp unit equipped with AAR Type B trucks (the type normally found under Alco units), body mounted handrails that were later changed, and a fuel tank skirting. It was originally classed as FS-15A but rebuilt by LIRR to 1600HP when they updated the prime mover and was re-classed to FGP-16sc, thus classed with the rest of the H16-44s. Date is approximate.
