Title:  "Horseshoe Curve," Pages 48-49, 2004
Description:  Here are portions of pages 11 and 12 of a 24-page cover article entitled "Horseshoe Curve: 150 Years." They were published originally in the August 2004 issue of "Trains" magazine, pages 48-49. Partial Caption: "If the torrent of smoke is any indication, the head-end crew is coaxing every bit of power out of the 2-10-4 leading this heavy freight up the hill, approaching the east side of Horseshoe Curve on October 3, 1952." Photo by Mr. Marvin Cohen. This train is about to pass under four-track Signal Bridge #2418, precisely where the Pennsylvania Railroad's Kittanning Point Passenger Station once stood.

Description:  The power is one of the three NYSW GP 18s, a unit that was acquired by a number of roads, but not on the scale of, say, the GP 9. At this point, the NYSW group may be the only ones still running. It sits next to the Lackawanna station, a building noted for its elegance, as much of the DLW stations were.

On the Cincinnatus Branch
Title:  On the Cincinnatus Branch
Description:  Ive always found it interesting how many branch lines went off into the hills for short distances to serve small towns. One such line was the DLWs branch to Cincinnatus NY, about 15 miles east of Cortland. Though it was abandoned early-1940s-it had passenger trains. Youd think there would not be enough traffic to sustain it, but there, it was. There isnt much left now, just a couple of miles heading out toward Mc Graw, on which is located this Suit Kote plant, which we see being switched by GP 18 1800.

Canned
Title:  Canned
Description:  NYSW would sometimes run a train up to Chenango Forks and stash it in the siding, perhaps because there was no room to hold a long train at Binghamton without making the local jobs lives difficult. As a result, you never knew what youd find there. Today, its an ex Cartier Alco with what appears to be an ex B&M GP 40-2, now a HATX lease unit, an ex NW SD 40, and a tunnel motor.
