IC 9601, IC 3137, and C&NW Kaukauna, WI Depot
Title:  IC 9601, IC 3137, and C&NW Kaukauna, WI Depot
Description:  CN local, with a friendly engineer, passes the south side of the former C&NW depot at Kaukauna, WI on 9 Jun. '15. Local had just completed servicing Expera Specialty Solutions, originally Thilmany Pulp and Paper Co. Designed in the Art Moderne style and built in 1947, it originally had a flat roof. The current gabled roof was added at some point after 1983.

C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office
Title:  C&NW/CN Oshkosh, WI Yard Office
Description:  The well-maintained yard office at the CN, former C&NW, yard at Oshkosh, WI on 7 Feb. '16. Normally this view of the facility is blocked by the cars in the yard. I've never seen this yard completely empty. This building sits several yards south of the location of C&NW's South Oshkosh depot, a smaller, plainer structure than their once ornate Oshkosh depot which still stands less than a mile to the north. Historically, everything south of the Fox River was once known as South Oshkosh. The C&NW South Oshkosh depot was saved from demolition, but its current fate is unknown to me. I have seen post-relocation photographs of it on the internet, but they do not reveal its precise location. Some references state it was moved to downtown Oshkosh, others state it was moved to a park in Oshkosh. If it still survives, I have not found it yet.

GTW 6221 and C&NW Neenah-Menasha, WI Depot
Title:  GTW 6221 and C&NW Neenah-Menasha, WI Depot
Description:  CN local passes the former C&NW Neenah-Menasha depot as it backs through the remnants of the C&NW Neenah-Menasha yard at Neenah, WI on 5 Jun. '16. The depot was built in 1893 to replace the original ca. 1861 depot. It was restored in 1994 and is currently home to Gries Architectural Group, Inc., and Sturtevant & Associates, LLC, an insurance firm. While quite rusty, the metal C&NW sign still adorns the trackside gable above the arched window. The original C&NW Neenah depot, built ca. 1861, was located near Galloway Co., 601 S Commercial St. The depot was later moved behind the Jersild Knitting Co., 333 N. Commercial St (about 400-500 feet out of frame to the left). It was razed after new depot was completed. The border between the Twin Cities of Neenah and Menasha bisects the yard about 200 feet north of the depot, out of frame to the right.

C&NW Spooner, WI Depot
Title:  C&NW Spooner, WI Depot
Description:  The northeast wall of the former C&NW depot at Spooner, WI on 23 Jun. '16. The opposite end of the depot receives the most attention from photographers because that is the end visitors first see when they arrive, so I thought I would post a photograph of this equally interesting end of this historic railroad structure. Constructed in the Craftsman style for the CStPM&O (CMO) in ‘02 by Ashland, WI contractor T. E. Pugh. It measured 288’ long by 32’ wide (52’ wide with the overhangs) and cost $25,000. The northern half had a second story for railroad offices. Passenger service ended in ’61. The northern half of the depot was demolished in ’63. The remaining portion has been home to the Railroad Memories Museum since ’90. The last freight train passed by in ’92.

C&NW and SOO Wisconsin Rapids, WI Depot/Yard Office
Title:  C&NW and SOO Wisconsin Rapids, WI Depot/Yard Office
Description:  The south and east walls of the former joint C&NW/SOO depot/yard office at Wisconsin Rapids, WI on 4 Jul. '17. It was built ca. 1973, when both roads had parallel yards of approximately 4 tracks each. Currently used by CN and UP. This portion of Wisconsin Rapids, formerly Grand Rapids, was known as West Rapids, shortened to Westrap on some old maps and railroad documents.

CN 5681, et al.
Title:  CN 5681, et al.
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Broad St. and passes the former C&NW depot as it heads north at Oshkosh, WI on 8 Jun '18. Built by the Chicago firm of Clark & Fuller in 1884 at a cost $15,000, it opened on 1 Dec. ’84. The depot was more ornate when completed, some of its interesting architectural elements have been removed over the years. The last passenger train, the Peninsula “400,” departed on 31 Jun. ’71. The depot is currently used by Clarity Care. I used to believe that this depot replaced the older MLS&W depot which stood at Warren St. and Jay St. (both streets no longer exist but the site was southwest of the intersection of Pearl Ave. and Jackson St.), because the MLS&W was a subsidiary of the C&NW. I recently learned that both roads operated independently in Oshkosh until at least 1893, when the MLS&W was completely absorbed by the C&NW. In fact, the MLS&W also built a new stone depot in Oshkosh in 1894, to replace their older, wooden depot. Some references state, erroneously, that this depot replaced the C&NW's South Oshkosh depot. However, the C&NW operated both depots for years after this one was completed. Train had two locomotives, CN 5681 and CN 5719.

C&NW Powers, MI Depot/Yard Office
Title:  C&NW Powers, MI Depot/Yard Office
Description:  The southwest and southeast walls of the CN, former C&NW, depot/yard office at the intersection of 2nd St. and Front St., Powers, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The original depot stood until at least 1969. I think it stood a few hundred feet to the southwest, within the convergence of the north and east legs of the wye (but I'm not positive).

Title:  C&NW Iron Mountain, MI, Depot
Description:  The north and west walls of the former C&NW depot at Iron Mountain, MI on 3 Nov. '18. The depot opened on 22 Dec. 1889, to replace the original 1880 wooden depot. The original depot, which stood almost due west of the current depot, was converted into a freight house. The current depot has been home to various commercial enterprises since the railroad sold it ca. 1953.

CNW Clintonville, WI, Depot
Title:  CNW Clintonville, WI, Depot
Description:  The south (originally northwest) and west (originally northeast) walls of the second C&NW depot at Clintonville (originally Pigeon), WI, on 13 Sep. '20. It was constructed in the Craftsman style in 1914 at a cost of $2,500. C&NW was ordered to replace the original, ca. 1878, depot after the city lodged a complaint with the Railroad Commission of Wis. that it was inadequate for the needs of the growing community. The new depot was built in the same spot as the old depot, on the north side of the main line, about 150 ft. east of Main St. (formerly New London St.), south of 5th St. (formerly 11th St., formerly Young St.), on the north side of what would be E. 4th St. (formerly Guernsey St., formerly Dorr St.) if it extended east of Main St. The depot closed in 1976. The site is currently the parking lot on the north side of a wonderful Walgreens. The depot has been turned approximately 115 degrees counterclockwise from its original orientation and moved approximately 300 feet southeast of its original location. It is currently occupied by KerberRose CPAs.
