This beautiful and powerful locomotive was the first of 65 4-8-4 Northerns built by Alco-Schenectady for the Rock Island. Initially built in February of 1929 as CRIP #5000 with 67" drivers, it was rebuilt in the late 1930's and given 74" drivers for use with passenger trains. The loco was sold for scrap in June of 1951. Original specs - 69" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 434,000 lb and tractive effort of 66,620 lb. No photographer was listed for this photo. |
