ATSF 4-8-4 #3753 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe  Contributor's Pick!
With a need for more powerful locomotives to handle the ever increasing passenger and freight train lengths, the Santa Fe turned to the Northern 4-8-4 configuration, named after the 1st railroad - Northern Pacific - to receive them. This 1927 Baldwin built locomotive running in the wide open expanses in this photo was an ATSF class 3751 with tall 73" drivers. It developed a boiler pressure of 210 psi and generated an impressive 66,021 lb tractive effort. Rebuilt in 1938, it would have almost all of the modern improvements making it one of the best. The class was retired in 1956-57. The date is approximate
