Horseshoe Curve-1959. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 3 September 1959. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9621, an AF-16 built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1951 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. It's the lead unit pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. |
