CHGX #509 - Chicago Gravel Co |
Description: |
Here's a real boomer of the industrial switcher world! Built by Whitcomb in August of 1941 (bn #60105) for the munitions contractor Day & Zimmerman as their #4-44, it was sold to the US Army as #7308 during WWII. Next it was sold to McGraw Construction Co, then bounced to the Chicago Gravel Co of South Elgin, IL, as their #509. Then it was traded to the Port of Indiana in 1984 and painted red, white & blue as their #1776. Finally it was sold to the Hoosier Valley RR Museum as their #27 in 1988 where it resides today, still working the rails. T.R. Lawson photo |
