Top Photo, Partial Caption: "This is the New York-Washington-St. Louis 'St. Louisan' crossing the Little Juniata River in central Pennsylvania." Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #5901 and another unit whose number is not recorded. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5901 was built in September of 1945 and is presently on display at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1954. The photographer is not identified. Shown here are four diesel-electric locomotives climbing the Allegheny Mountains and rounding the Curve with a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train bound for Pittsburgh and points West. In the lead are helper engines #9456 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are FF-20's built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #9456 was constructed in November of 1947 and retired in January of 1963; it's the first unit of its class owned by the PRR. Behind them are PRR engines #5857 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5857 was constructed in February of 1948. |
