Amtrak No. 24
Title:  Amtrak No. 24
Description:  It's 6:42 on a Thursday evening and the eastbound GULF COAST LIMITED is being passed up by the rush-hour traffic on Interstate 10. Today's train is much longer than the typical 3- or 4-car consist, because of a special group that came in today or which has made reservations for tomorrow. Train No. 24 is on the NOUPT Eastern Connection, descending from the Metairie Road overpass, and is just beginning its trip to Mobile. Notice the blue 1984 Louisiana World Exposition signs on the right. The train was introduced shortly before the Fair opened and was discontinued shortly after the Fair closed.

SDP40F 611
Title:  SDP40F 611
Description:  By the time this photo was taken of Amtrak 611 (and 631) most of Amtrak's 150 SDP40F units had been traded in on F40PHR's. The 611 and 631 had been used in work train service in Michigan, and were in storage at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Less than a year after this photo was taken the 611 was traded in of F40's 391-400, which were built in July and August 1985. The 631 lasted a little longer, and was one of the last nine SDP40F's to be retired. These were used as trade-in credit on F40's 401-409, which were built between December 1987 and February 1988.

AMTK E9A 468
Title:  AMTK E9A 468
Description:  Amtrak E9A 468 was built as Union Pacific 909 in September 1961, and it was among the last E-units produced, as only ten more were built after it. The locomotive was leased to Amtrak as the 1414 in May 1972, and sold to them as the 414 in December 1973. The unit was not included in Amtrak’s final big E-unit auction of 1981, and was parked at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal for the next six years. When this photo was taken, the 414 had recently been renumbered 468 in small numerals at the rear; but never operated with this number. It was finally sold and left NOUPT in 1987, and was acquired by the Louisiana Railway Heritage Trust in 2009.

The CITY had Amtrak 77 for power and would run as NS train R20 to Hattiesburg, where it would get on the CN-IC Beaumont District and then regain its regular route at Jackson, Mississippi.
