Flood damage |
Description: |
A 6 foot section of severely undermined trackage shows the power of moving water. A small pipe under the track was unable to handle the results of 8 inches of rain in a 8 hour period resulting in the water pushing through the ballast and rushing through to the other side. The railroad was acting as a dam until it was breached by the rising waters. |

Description: |
Looking timetable south at Thomasville we see the old ACL passenger station to the right of the mainline. The tracks going off to the right form a wye and the old line to Perry FL. I understand it goes as far south as Metcalf FL now. Trackage to the left is remnants of the old AB&C line that used to go all the way to Fitzgerald via Moultrie and Tifton. CSX now operates it as far north as Coolidge GA. |

An extra crew has arrived and is working on completing the tasks of G91 from yesterday. They are in the process of gathering up 140+ cars for Albany GA and have just coupled onto 28 carloads of pipe on the former CofG/Southern mainline to Dothan AL. The Chattahoochee Bay, whose lead locomotive can be seen to the left, has just arrived with the 28 carloads and as soon as the NS pulls them past the switch, the CHAT locomotives will go get the rest of their train. They had to cut it off due to not being able to get up the hill into Hilton due to tonnage. |

Former CofG depot |
Description: |
I a not sure what the former Central of Georgia depot in Smithville is being used for but it looks well kept. The metal roof is perhaps not quite historically accurate but we'll certainly take it in order to preserve history. |

BV&E junction |
Description: |
We are looking south toward Albany GA on the old CofG at Americus GA. This location was known as Hope in the past bnd is now known as BV&E Junction (The Buena Vista and Ellaville Railroad was the name of the original line that ran west out of Americus and was named for 2 towns it passed through. The BV&E RR was brought under CofG control in 1895. Perhaps NS saw fit to honor the past with the naming of the junction) The line on my right would have been part of the BV&E RR and now goes to Columbus GA although it appears to be little used if used at all. The line on my left goes to Ft Valley and Macon. Many years ago there was double track between this point and about 2 miles south of Americus at a point known as Opto. If you down the track you can see the track now known as the old main line and is now a yard track. |

NS switch engine |
Description: |
The Americus switch engine is seen at the former freight depot. The old Southwestern freight depot sat just beyond the depot seen in thiy photo and was torn down a few years ago. The depot seen in this photo sits on the site of the old passenger station. Remnants of the foundation are visible in the pavement between the street and the depot. |
