Amtrak's "Southwest Chief"
Title:  Amtrak's "Southwest Chief"
Description:  Upon train #4s 15-minute late arrival in Fullerton, California, Amtrak Conductor Moncada surveys a large group of Japanese tourists (headed to New Mexico) with their own food supply. This coach wouldnt do, so the train was pulled ahead two additional car lengths so that the group could ride in a Superliner Coach/Baggage. The passengers formed a "bucket brigade" to quickly and efficiently stow their provisions (much more quickly than I had expected them to). Throughout, Conductor Moncada exhibited patience, professionalism and a positive attitude and the eastbound “Southwest Chief” departed not too far behind schedule.

Description:  Progress Rail Services PR22B 2006, which is testing on the Pacific Harbor Line, is getting serviced in the PHLs Pier A Yards enginehouse on September 11, 2011. This four-axle GenSet demonstrator has three Caterpillar 745 hp C18 engines, for a total horsepower rating of 2,235 hp. Each of these engines is housed in its own compartment, which can be easily swapped for a new compartment for maintenance. There are sizable gaps between each compartment, as well as between them and the cab and the engines end, giving this engine a unique appearance.

Description:  One of the Pacific Harbor Lines two 3GS21C genset locomotives brings a cut of baretables (empty well cars) northward (railroad "east") across the Badger Bridge and off of Terminal Island. With all the containers moving by rail and by highway in the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, as well as various marine vessels, this lift bridge and the adjacent Ford lift bridge (for highway traffic) are a busy place, as the spans are lifted and lowered with great regularity, holding up highway traffic and, at times, rail traffic. While owned and operated by PHL, these tracks also see a steady flow of BNSF Railway and Union Pacific trains as well. [Photo taken on railroad property with permission.]

Title:  AMTK train #4
Description:  There is always a flurry of activity when a passenger train arrives in Fullerton (and there are many of them each day!), but there is extra activity when Amtraks "Southwest Chief" arrives - luggage to be loaded into the baggage car, farewells to be said before loved ones board for points east, and commuters watching all the hubbub while waiting for their Metrolink or "Pacific Surfliner" train. As the days grow shorter, this all takes place under the cover of darkness, adding an exciting element to a transcontinental train trip! (Well, Los Angeles to Chicago is about as transcontinental as Amtrak gets without having to change trains.)

Description:  Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #784 is due to depart Fullerton, California, at 5:40 pm. But, due to delays north of Los Angeles, the train is running a little late - arriving in Fullerton at 6:25. Thanks to a tip from friend Charles Freericks (who saw the train in L.A.), I was able to grab this shot of the train, led by F59PHI 457 in a new Operation Lifesaver wrap. Knowing the 457 was on the point caused me to search out an angle to shoot, whereas I might otherwise have concentrated on a westbound due at about this time because it had the "better" light. In retrospect, I like this light much better! (Thanks, Charles!)
