Description:  This was the first 6-8-4 Northern type locomotive built by Alco-Schenectady in 1929 for the Rock Island RR. According to a note written by photographer Floyd L. Paige(?) on back "Rock Island No 5000 4-8-4, fast frieght (sic) type 9 largest engine road owns." Specifics - Class R-65a, Specnfics - 69" drivers, 250 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, 434,000 lb engine weight, 66,620 lb tractive effort. No date or location given for this photo and it appears to be a later, very contrasty reprint.

Description:  This beautiful and powerful locomotive was the first of 65 4-8-4 Northerns built by Alco-Schenectady for the Rock Island. Initially built in February of 1929 as CRIP #5000 with 67" drivers, it was rebuilt in the late 1930's and given 74" drivers for use with passenger trains. The loco was sold for scrap in June of 1951. Original specs - 69" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 434,000 lb and tractive effort of 66,620 lb. No photographer was listed for this photo.
